In Dallas...

...eating brisket tacos.

That is all.

(Actually, no, it's not at all, they have me running about like a hamster on a wheel, and I look like either a zombie or someone who's been punched in both eyes, but for this moment, this taco is the center of my world.)

Will you post a few words on your LA film screening experience? We were all so excited for you and hope to hear it was as much fun as you had hoped for.

I'm also into tacos but only with meat and chedder cheese on a flour tortilla.

Also, Julie, my blog is something you would really love to read. I'm dedicating it to you.

I was at a pre-screening last night in Napa for the movie and loved it! I was given the tickets for free by a colleague and decided to go. I'm so glad I went. I'm now inspired to cook and I hate to cook! I would rather have three bowls of cereal everyday than cook - but I just may cook this weekend...maybe.

Hi Julie -- saw the movie at a screening a couple of weeks ago. I absolutely loved it. (Hope you did too!) I look forward to the book. Only, I hope it doesn't make me cry like the movie did. I called my husband at the end, and blubbered.

I too have a 100+ pound moose, I mean dog. How I wish I could write books in my pajamas!! (Especially if it leads to a room at the Ritz-Carlton).

Dear Julie,

My husband gave me your book for my bday (July 27), and I love it. It's a guilty pleasure, like the duck confit I just had at Michael Symon's Lola today, and there are some of the most savory sentences (I am an admirer of well-written, unforgettable sentences). I'm a food blogger and wasn't going to read your book or see the movie -- a little cliche, it seemed -- but I've changed my mind. Thank you for some laugh out loud moments and hours of enjoyment. Love your characterization of your crazy friend Gwen.

Hi Julie :)
My name is Noha & i'm from Egypt, i came across the ad of the movie about you and you can't how excited and happy i was -and still-. My situation is similar to you, i work as a s/w developer in a company with no creation or enthusiasm, everyone around me says:"stick to it, from where you can get money if you quit, labla bla..". I love cooking and i do create my own -not so yummy sometimes-, that i was thinking of opening a restaurant. This movie and your book is a sign for me to stop wasting my life and live it the way i want. Again thank you very much for sharing this with us

Cheers, :)

I have a question for those who have screened the movie already. My 11 year old daughter is a foodie and saw the preview for the movie while watching "The Next Food Network Star". I am concerned about the pg-13 rating for the sexuality (not the language - it's amazing the lack of regard people have when they talk in front of kids these days). In your opinion, do you think it is appropriate?

I am reading your book, as I enjoy Julia Child and memoirs...I am disgusted at your patronizing response to people who had beloved family and friends DIE on Sept. 11- not sure I'll finish the book, although though it was greatly appealing to me- love to cook. This is embarrassing...You appear to have NO compassion.

Maps - I'm sorry you feel that my book expresses no compassion for the families of 9/11 victims, because that was not my intent at all. I merely wanted to show that being faced with that suffering - and with the various complaints of everyday New Yorkers who seemed to feel that their irritations with, say, the memorial design or some such, equating the agonies and traumas of those who had actually suffered in that horrible event - took a toll on me personally, as a secretary with no power to truly help, and overwhelmed by bureaucratic nonsense. I could have written a varnished pretty version of my experience, all sweetness and light, but to me that is what would have been dishonest and disrespectful to those who have truly suffered so much.

Also - I'm not a government drone anymore, and the Ritz-Carlton is on Sony's tab.

Kel - I don't know your eleven-year-old, so it's hard for me to tell you. I brought my six-year-old niece to the screening last night with no negative repurcussions. There's one "fuck," a couple of "shits" and an "asshole" - of course, I personally wish there'd been far more cursing, for authenticity's sake. As far as the sex - it's implied, not explicit. You do see Amy Adam's naked back as she's carried to the bed by Chris Messina. That's as far as it goes. So, for what it's worth, there you go.

I have been so excited, I have so wanted to see the movies and thought I just had to read the book first. BUT, I can't. Toooo many "F " words, "S" words, dildos etc. How can a bright, beautiful woman allow herself to talk like male gutter trash. It's like taking a beautiful masterpiece and sling dung at it.

How I wanted to embrace Julie Powell and her creation.

Hello,
Dear Susan, I must tell you as a professional chef I was very impressed in the book how much she began to swear more as she learnt to cook..all cooks do this..that is why I was so impressed with her genuine intent of really wanting to cook..it really is primal. Real cooks do not have the constraints of religion, race, or creed..that is what makes us who we are..no hold bard. Language means nothing..it is the food that maters.
I mean this very sincerly.

Hey, Julie, I was at the DMA in Dallas, and I loved your rambling. Whatever you might have thought, you were funny and charming. (I was the one at the end of the signing line who suggested you cozy up to booksellers in your quest for world-wide literary domination.)

As far as the comment from the person who was unhappy with what he or she felt was your lack of compassion, might I suggest that he or she read Nathanael West's brilliant "Miss Lonelyhearts" to get an idea of what your job was like.

My friend I saw the movie with is leaving for Europe and one of her stops is Paris so seeing the movie now is so exciting for her to now go and eat and experience the GREAT food Paris has to offer.
I'll get there one day and eat my way through Paris.
BTW,

Just saw the movie and was enthralled with your life. When I got home I ordered the cookbooks and a dutch oven to try some of the recipes I saw during the movie. I have no intention of cooking my way through but I am looking forward to trying out a few that don't involve killing anything or de-boning. I have to say that I felt sad that you never got to meet her and that she didn't take the time to see what you were truly doing. If she was really the person portrayed in the movie I think she would have found your quest to be delightful. Good luck in your next endeavor and thanks for allowing me to share a piece of your life.

Hi Julie,
You have basically changed my view of food. I used to think food was anything that took less than 10min to make, or you could shove into your mouth without choking on it in one bite. But after reading your post, you made me realize that food is and art, and that art takes a lot of time, effort, imstakes, and in this case, ingredients to actually be called food. Because of this, food is now part of my life, and even though I'm only 14 years old, I'm think of making it a part of my life.
