I love this

So, last night I went to a screening where I expected to get beaten up by Judith Jones and/or Ruth Reichl, but instead had incredibly kind words spoken to me by Sara Moulton. And today, a journalist has come rallying to my defense here.

It's so sweet - I love it! But little does Jennie know, I have been successful at almost completely ignoring the haters. I haven't googled myself in weeks, I tell you, WEEKS!

I have your book and intend to read it before I see the movie. I want to read about the real you before I see the sanitized you on screen. One of the biggest "Aha!" moments in my life was when I learned my maternal grandmother, who died before I was born, cursed a lot - as I do. I gave me a sense of connection with her. She was also revered by friends and her children so a bit of blue air doesn't seem to have done her memory any harm. Wishing you great luck with all future endeavours!

I finished your book (loved it) before the movie premier on Friday. My only hope is that they don't sanitize your character-boo. When I read your book your character actually reminds me of my 20 y.o. daughter who for some reason was born w/a sailor's mouth. In a wierd way she is so endearing as are you. Thank you for your book. PS-On the grounds of maybe sounding redundant how about MtAoFC II? Yes? Don't Hate.

I finished your book yesterday and intend to go back through to re-read passages and pages I marked along the way. The book is one of my favorite reads. I saw you speak at the Texas Conference for Women here in Austin a couple of years ago and have been inspired ever since! Enjoy the success :) My neighbor and I are going to see the movie this weekend then going shopping at Williams-Sonoma.

I've been enjoying the press and even the critics writing about the movie. I have the luxury of not being portrayed in it so it's not personal to me. I like the article and the photo in Jennie Yabroff's piece, both are flattering. Best!

Julie,
This is my first time on your blog even though of heard of it and your book for some time now. I just started my food blog back in May but I have "met" some wonderful people and tried some fantastic recipes through this process. What a great idea with your Julie/Julia project. Congratulations on your book and movie. I'm going to read the book and see the movie. Best of luck to you.

Julie, one of the things I love most about your book is your true character and genuine nature. Any one who chooses to question this probably should do some of their own self-reflection. Stay brave and follow your heart and keep loving your wonderful soul-mate. The only thing that matters is that you know yourself and love yourself flaws and all. :)

+"julie powell" +evil (38,100 hits)

+"julia childs" +good (23,000 hits)

ya see, the good julie powell is killing the evil julie powell and slaughtering the good julia childs.

okay so the evil hits climbed by 500 in a minute and the good hits dropped 300. i don't think it means anything. besides you have plenty of buffer for a few bad news cycles. your like obama for chrissakes.

Hi Julie. My name is Wilsimara. I'm from Brazil and I've been living here for 3 years (in Astoria). I'm incredibly happy to write to you. Since I moved to this country a got filled with a lot of different feelings like sadness, loneliness and craziness!!! The job that I don't like. A boyfriend that loves me. I was totally lost in life when I found your book online in a brazilian book store. Actually I was looking for a big old traditional cook book to make something different to my boyfriend (the reason that I've moved). Asked my mother to send me the book and I've read the book in a week which is a record for me.
I thought that I could do something like you to change my life but it didn't work. The story looks like mine in a lot of ways. There's so much about me here. I believe that everyone will see their image on the screen. To condense the whole story I'm happy now. I do still with my boyfriend, with my 2 cats and looking for something to make life different. We've decided to back to our country next year. When I found out about the movie I had a thought about you. "She's my friend. I know her. I know her story. She lives close to me." :)
I am sooo happy and proud of you. I can't even believe that you're going to read this because you may be very busy.
Thanks a lot for making a huge difference in my life. I will never forget your story. And I will be at the theater tomorrow. Probably crying!!! Best wishes!!

Ignore the haters! There will be and are a lot of people coming to your defense these days. Not everyone in the "foodie community" is a stuck up snotty stuck-on-themselves chef who thinks themself better than the homecook. Being a "foodie" isn't knowing how to make the latest and greatest froo froo dish . . .it's being in love with food and persevering in the kitchen. It's therapy and can be life changing.

I just started "the book" tonight and can't put it down--well except to come on here and read your blog. :) I'm seeing the movie early next week and wanted to get "the real story" before I saw the movie. You go girl!

Julie,

Saw the Pittsburgh screening last night. You are incredible in a very human, down-to-earth way, as comfirmed by your recent blogging here.

I'm glad the referenced article states what Nora's lusciously romanticized movie doesn't state: That what make you so accessible is that you are just like everybody else--only you did something about it to get meaning in your life!

Julie, I hope you take time to read this comment from a humble reader. This could be yet another turning point in your life, like your "Days to Go: 365" day.

I'm working with the Pittsburgh community on a project tied to the G-20 Summit. The Pittsburgh business community would like to spread the word that everybody can deal with the economic crisis by using 21st century tools and taking a personal stand.

We'll offer some tools to make the business world further accessible to the masses, but basically, people will say, "I don't think it's as easy as you make it sound."

Julie, you are now an icon in the world, a symbol of what is possible. Your openness and honesty mean that you are a meaningful and believable icon.

Just as you had know idea of what was possible, until it all happened, I'd like you to explore (modestly, but with a sense of awe) how you might be the woman who changes the world. Certainly there are others, just like you, that we'll never know about. But you arose at a time in history when you were most needed. Are you ready to serve this exciting, but challenging, role?

E-mail me if interested. I won't ask much of you right now to get started.

LOVED the article! Julie - the "haters" can just fuck off - they are all probably neo-nazi conservative fascists... why am I such a freakshow about defending you? Because I am a cook - not chef because I never went to school, but cooking professionally is something that I have done, and been successful - I thought I knew pretty much anything (except how to blow sugar and sculpt ice) UNTIL I bought MtAoFC... All I've been able to make so far is scrambled eggs... scrambled fucking eggs! I felt naked at the stove. Seriously - what you did - for our generation and for anyone who needs a project was/is amazing!

Blogger Wanderlusting said...

It's a shame all the movie reviews I am reading are looking down on your role in the movie.

They make you seem whiny, narcissistic and selfish. A brat, if you will. I don't know if that's the screenwriter's fault and I don't know if it is your character or not - and even if it is, so what?

But I will say...it's a blog! Blogs are supposed to be self-centered...it's about YOUR journey to finding yourself and the meaning in your life. Hell, I hear comments all the time about how "self-involved" my blog is...well, duh - it's about me! Of course it is self-involved. If people don't like reading about ME or YOU then they can go read something else.

Lots of people out there who don't "get" blogging, don't get that part and I think that's the only reason why critics are having fault with your role in the film. They just don't get it.

Don't worry...your readers and other bloggers do get it and we all know where you are coming from. And if any other bloggers (or writers) say otherwise, then they are just jealous and dealing with it in a stupid way.

Juile, I saw you movie last night in a packed house! Everyone seemed to enjoy every bit of it.

While reviewers may not care for your part of the story, let's face it- without your interest in cooking your way thru MtAoFC there wouldn't be this much interest in Julia Child.

Much of the public has only remembered her as a sketch or a joke. With out you, the mass public wouldn't know what a treasure and influence she was. Your interest in her cooking became our interest in it as well

Without your blog there would be no "Julie and Julia" movie. And without the Julie part of the equation there wouldn't be the mass interest in Julia Child.

Now it's plainly obvious why the foodie-supremacists hate you. Jealousy. They have never been and will never be as influential over public opinion as your little blog became.

The very idea that some imperfect nobody without formal training can cook her way through a cookbook frightens the magazines who prefer to perpetuate an elitist quality to being able to enjoy food.

I've been reading the reviews of J&J and I think the criticism of you is really unfair. At least for my generation (I'm 32), you really made Julia relevant again. The only thing I really knew about Julia Child before I read your book was that she was the host of my least favorite of the public television cooking shows that my Dad watched! Not only was your experiment fun and interesting to read about, but you've done a great service by bringing Julia Child to a whole new audience (but you probably hear this all the time)...

my gosh, just saw the movie and met Julie. Amy Adams and Nora were cute and wholesome, but would either of them "jump on a bar to down a couple of shots" I doubt it!! Julie on the other hand, just a wild guess here.....
Julie is not a chef, but she can cook. Where is the harm in that, and write? She has a great voice and undertook a project that certainly brought out lots of "Passion" in herself and personal growth. KUDOS'S to her for her work.
She is not the one to be blamed for the movie nor how Amy plays the real Julie.

My guess is , if Amy and played Julie the movie would be a screaming R and therefore not allow a lot of audience to pay to see this vast misinterpretation of a real person, not a made for the public character.

I'm still teary-eyed an hour after leaving the damn theater... I know it's a romantic interpretation of your story, but just the fact that someone else has felt exactly like I do when I walk out of work makes me feel a little better. My fiance took me to see the movie tonight because lately (with increasing frequency) I bemoan the state of my life, that I feel like a drone, that I feel like no matter how much I accomplish at work, I come home to the same routine. And I started crying when we got in the car from the movie theater, because he understood how I felt, and I think you understand how I feel too. I feel better now, if a little ridiculous because a movie has affected me so profoundly, and I'm going to do something about it.

And I'm also going to read your first book because it sounds fucking hysterical, and I truly wish you the best of luck with your second.

Thanks Julie for being honest about your personal life in the next book. There will always be haters just disregard them. I bet they are not perfect either, no one is.

I have owned your book for years thanks to hearing you on an interview on All Things Considered or some other NPR program. I am only now finding (or, let's be honest - making) time to read it. My two young children do all they can to keep me from any activities I used to find pleasurable! In any event, I am so sad to learn you are being so maligned. I'm having such a great time reading your book and look forward to receiving the movie (via Netflix, sorry!) one of these days. You really needn't concern yourself with the criticism; they just need something to write and being positive is so darn boring.

Thank you Julie and Julia,

I have just finished reading your wonderful book and look forward to reading Julia's too when I can get hold of it.

Absolutely inspired, honest, positive, maybe a touch too much of the Gordon Ramsay F word but this is the 21st F-ing century!

Love from Jackie across the pond xxx
