Today's the Day!

That's right.... it's what we've all been waiting for..... The Opening of G.I. Joe! Who's psyched?!!!

Kidding. Yeah, J&J opens today. I'm not sure what I'm going to do to celebrate. Last night I made Julia's Coq au Vin for the first time in, honestly, years. It was fantastic, and purple (Eric's comment - "That whole year just sticks out in my mind as so... purple"), and we ate at 11 at night. It was very Project. Today, no cooking. And no watching J&J - I've seen it six times by now, and at this point, sweet as it is, it's like beating my head against a board. Dinner out, I think. Prune, perhaps? On a Friday night, I don't much like my chances, maybe I can pull a "Do you know who I am?" deal. But probably not.

Hey, you might not remember me, but we sat next to each other on a Mediabistro panel back in December '06 ("Blogger to Author"). Anyway, I just wanted to drop you a note and say congratulations on the movie and on your continued success. I've read so much good press, and it makes me crazy happy to see you in the middle of it all. I hope you're enjoying at least some of this! Best wishes for continued success, I'm really looking forward to the new book.

I'm back after being absent for over a year. I feel so strongly about this that I had to comment as I did a year ago when I was disspaointed in the book being political and I decided not to read it any further.
I'm watching The View right now and Nora Effron was on. Why does this woman think we care to hear about Julia Child's sex life? How mortifying for this poor woman who is dead. I refuse to go see this movie. It's sad someone with a little deceny couldn't of been the one who had wrote this blog than maybe the Movie would of done with respect for Julia Child.

Cranelegs - your brother runs Po? I love that place! Haven't been in a while... I wound up just getting regular reservations at Prune....

Julie - fascinating. I have a hard time my head around the notion that being depicted as a life-loving, hearty, sexually satisfied woman of power is disrespectful. But difference of opinion is what makes horse races, I guess.... I think it's more respectful to celebrate the amazing Julia Child by showing all her glorious humanity, rather than stuffing her back in a "respectful" book. But that's just me.

Yay for the movie because it enabled me to (finally) pick up your book in the godforsaken Dayton airport. (BTW when it was time to board, this is how they let us know: the gate agent walked over to the bar and said, not very loudly, to all three of us sitting there, "Hey, anyone going to Philly, the plane is boarding." That was the only announcement.)

So anyhow I don't usually write fan mail to random memoirists, but I read the book and thought two things: 1) "Gabba, gabba, one of us..." and 2) "Julia Child is the new Elvis."

It felt like you took my spot in NYC when I left. I temped my way through NYC in the mid 90's. Left in 2000 but get back occasionally because my brother lives in Briarwood, Queens. And can't imagine that anything less than taping a TV appearance at my house would've caused me to miss "Chosen" when it first aired.

Read some of the reviews for the movie and it made me think of the film "Adaptation" because it's about an attempt to film a story that's mainly about what's going on in people's heads -- you can't really do it. It sounds like Nora compensated by sticking in the Julia origin story, which has mythical, quasi-religious weight (partly in thanks to you), plus a movie star.

In in my head, the Julia scenes in the movie should have that fuzzy white frame around them that are supposed to indicate that they happen in an alternate dimension. And Julia and Paul would have glittering golden skin and sequinned outfits. I bet that bit got left out.

Read your blog for the first time today...and because of your comment about those who hate you, I had to google for myself and find out exactly why some do indeed hate you? For what it is worth...ridiculous I say! To those food bloggers that despise you... what kind of commitment did you make to cooking or to an icon like Julia..other than to write a blog..and then hate on others when notoriety shows up for them! They don't really hate you Julie...they hate themselves for not having the heart and soul to TRY! I loved the movie. This world needs to learn more about people who believed in possibility...like you. And even when you seemed to get lost for a few, you held up to your commitment anyway. So forget about the haters...bask in the beauty of your triumph and for having the guts to put it all out there. There will always be critics sweetheart!

Hi Julie,

I'm a 70 year old broadcaster now living in Portland, Oregon. I've been reviewing movies since 1971, as one of the first women to do call in radio talk shows in Miami and Boston.

I saw the movie at a preview this week and thought it was outstanding. My review will give it an "A" on Ellen's Entertainment Report Card (late because I had some medical tests this week).

Nora Ephron blended the two stories just right, and all the acting was excellent. Just ignore the nay-sayers here and elsewhere. I've been blogging since last year and was on forums for four years before that. There are always people who want to try and ruin your success. People have all kinds of agendas and viewpoints when they go to movies. That can't be helped.

Regarding the OPINION about learning of an older woman's sex life... well, I can tell you that lots of people are curious about that. I dated Larry King but didn't marry him. Of course, he didn't ask me. I took over his radio show in 1971 when he was arrested. I can tell you that many people want to know about THAT adventure and I write about it in my blog!

Isn't it always the people who DON'T read your book (or don't finish it) and DON'T WANT to see the movie who make the biggest noises? I can never understand that at all! What a bunch of hogwash!

I might add that I'm not a cook, and am on a low cholesterol diet, but last night, I bought some butter and grilled some fish in it with lemon, salt and pepper. Delicious!

I used to work for the City of New York in the 1960s -- lived in Manhattan 1962-69. It was fun to see the exteriors in the movie and also the period work when Julia was in France. I totally love Meryl Streep AND Stanley Tucci. They were both amazing!

Warm regards,

Ellen Kimball

Being a girl who is a lover of food and cooking, old enough to remember watching Julia, and have fun writing the occasional humorous blog....it was a match made in heaven! My mother AND my daughter were with me...it was the perfect outing for us to enjoy together! By the way, the lady down the way that was commenting about it not treating Ms. Child with respect....are you kidding? I came away with a whole NEW respect for her and loved the bliss it portrayed she found with her husband of all those years. And the parallels it showed in your lives. My gosh! It made me love her zest! (Not speaking of the lemon sort..lol) Here's wishing the same continued happiness for you and yours! Thanks....it was wonderful.

G.I. Joe vs. Julie & Julia - the ultimate show-down. I find a wee bit of irony in G.I. Joe apparently starting off in France and taking down the Eiffel Tower - its like they took this movie competition a bit too seriously. Really over the top! Men aren't known for their subtlety though, are they?

I've been writing the same book for 20 years and I kept saying "maybe I'll become a writer... one day..." The book was originally titled "The Secretary's Guide to Dreaming" and it has a much better title and purpose now. I mentioned the secretary title because I completely understand what it was like to be in that dead-end job and to listen to your friends succeed and wish, wish... wish. I know you have seen your movie 6 times. I think that I'll see it 7 times just to thank you again. Thank you for giving me hope. Thank you for cooking and writing... and wishing.

I am on my way home from seeing Julia/Julie. I absoluetly loved it. This movie was so refreshingly lovely and endearing. I consider myself to be a bit of an amateur cook. I love the challenge of doing what I think is overwhelming and impossible. Julia/Julia really inspired me to face obstacles; however daunting or silly, head on! Thank you so much for sharing your story!

What a treat to see J&J this afternoon! My girlfriends and I loved it! Yes, so refreshing to see Julia Child portrayed as a real person, sexual and all.

Congrats on the Jennie Yabroff article of vindication. As for the critics and whiners - "let'em eat cake"!

Hi Julie! My friend & I saw the sneak preview of J&J. I absolutely loved it!!! Adored your story and am never ceased to be amazed by Meryl Streep. I do have one issue that has been gnawing at me ALL DAY...what was the deal with Julia's reaction to your blog?!?!?! Was it true? Did she have dementia related personality changes or what? You handled it well and were brave for including it in the story. I just cannot wrap my head around it...

Julie,
My husband and I are celebrating our 27th wedding anniversary in Shelby, North Carolina. We weren't sure what we were going to do, but since we both love to cook and eat and we love Julia Child and Meryl Streep, the decision was easy. We went to a late afternoon show of "Julie and Julia" and then went to the Country Club for an awesome four course dinner prepared especially for us by the chef!
The movie and story were awesome. We think what you did was daunting and we are pleased it was a success. We are 100% sure that Julia Child could never have read your blog. If she had, she would have loved you...we do! Thanks for sharing your story. We wish you the best of luck.

Julie,
I went to see the movie tonight in Harvard Square --in the very Cambridge MA -- very exciting. I so enjoyed it. I used to read the blog and it was surreal to see it movie-fied. I don't mean to detract at all from any of the excitment of the movie-- but just need to say for the record that I missed any bit of *you* in that movie. Amy Adams is lovely but there was none of your wickedly good humor and sauciness. But all in all, what a wonderful trip. Meryl was awesome. And Stanley too.

Re-Inventing One's Self and Rebirth: Julie & Julia's Epiphany..
I just saw Julie & Julia at the AMC at Midnight and I kept thinking about the film all day. I rarely go to the movies but Meryl Streep is my favorite actress, not to mention my name also happens to be Julia. BTW was Julia Chid's husband THAT handsome? The film touched me because it reminded me a lot of myself; It's amazing how Paris looks like France in 1950, and hollywood can film there with zero hints we're actually in the 21st Century; It also reminded me of a love I had for Italy, and after learning entire Italian language being soarly disappointed with that country when I tried living there, not as a Tourist. It reminded me of what my father used to say to me as a child before he died "A Winner is a loser who just never quit".
What a wonderful lesson for us all. What a lovely film & story of how interwined yet isolated we all are in the world. I entered the theatre feeling that way, and left feeling connected. Im 110% certain Meryl will get an Oscar for her role in this witty, eye-candy filled movie! Im sure Julia Child is smiling down on Julie Powell too, after all they both worked so hard enough to see the Rainbow! Best Wishes on your continued success. -Julia

It didn't stick totally true to your book, but the movies never really do I guess. They still managed to capture the essence of your book though and made it very entertaining, I even got a little teary eyed at the end, a definite feel good/inspirational movie. The only disappointment...that your character didn't get to say the one and only "Fuck" allowed in a PG13 movie! :) I didn't expect it to come from Julia's husband, A.K.A. Stanley Tucci
Haha! Oh well, Congrats again on all of your(and hubbies) success!

From Houston, TX: The movie was excellent, and the story so compelling. As a weekend "cook", I was hooked! You can't believe the number of complete strangers in the movie theater that were talking to each other after the show about cooking - "grandma's biscuits made w/ a pad of butter between the layers", and "I'm going to start cooking - maybe once a week", etc.
I think I'll read your book!

Hey Julie,
Ignore the naysayers! You've created a Julia Child renaissance and it wouldn't have happened without you and your little blog. People are having fun with the French Chef again.
I remember when my best friend in high school told me about the new show on public TV (1964 in San Antonio), and we added it to our list of fun shows including Roller Derby and Shock Theater.
I got my own copy of the cookbook and as a young married served up my own version of Rubber Chicken to some dinner guests who were rudely late.
By the way, I visited your mom in Austin before I heard of your book, and when asked by relatives what Julie was doing, she demurely said, "Oh, she's a food writer in New York." I'd say that took a little restraint... Well, now your great aunt Maxine has read your book.... and she liked it! and she's even going to venture out to the movie theatre to see it...
Sincerely,

I thought I would mention that my 88 year old father lives with me. There's some kind of brain glitch that happens at that age that can cause oppositional defiant disorder. My father says no, he doesn't like it or want to do it before I get the question out of my mouth. Did you see Julia with Emeril talking about the scrawny chicken? That elderly brain glitch may have been behind her reaction to your blog--more her age than the ability to logically comment on your blog.

Congrats on the movie and all of your success!I wish that I had known about your blog when I had first come back to live in America in 2003. I lived in Paris and then Normandy since 1987.When I first arrived in Paris, I was armed with Pat Well's food lovers guide to Paris and an old copie of a Paul Bocuse cook book. My kitchen was tiny and old, but like you, I made great things in it.Eventually I married a French man and raised children in Normandy.I became friends with some pretty famous cooks over there. I won't mention their names. Sometimes I would experiment with their recipes and I'm pretty sure they didn't like that.
I miss France dreadfully everyday. Like so many ex-pats in Paris, I've written a book.. which I've never really finished.. despite everyone assuring me that it's a great book. For a while I was having things published in the cooking section of a newspaper.I guess I would just rather still be living in France than writing about it. My excuse for being afriad of rejection, really. I wish you much continued success and will read your blog from now on.

Hey you! I just have to tell you I cannot BELIEVE how wonderful the movie was!!! I haven't anticipated a movie more in ages!!!

I'd been having an absolute crappy day (my doctor told me I have to have surgery even though I'm pregnant with a little girl) and I thought nothing could make me happy after hearing that news. But I was NOT about to miss the movie. I've been waiting and waiting for it. I fell in love with it just from the previews!!

Anyway about a week before the movie came out I read your book and I just looooooved it!!!!! I love how you write, I love how you think. I aspire to become as wonderful of a writer as you. I have time :)

So going to see the movie was a must for me!!! All I can say is BRAVO!!!!! The movie was amazing. I'm glad you liked it, too. (I wonder how much input you had in making it...)

I loved this movie so much I actually cried at the end. I cried because it was such a perfectly good movie. It captured the essence of the book and it captured YOUR essence as well. Nothing was bad about this film. The only downside to this movie was it was a tad bit long. But if MY life was going to be made into a movie I wouldn't care if it was three days long! Other than that...nothing. Just wonderful wonderful movie.

I hope it wins an academy award, I really do. It is definitely a contender for my favorite movie of ALL time!!!

All this to say I really enjoyed the movie. Almost as much as I enjoyed the book (which is rare)

My husband, daughter and I saw the movie last night in the only movie theater in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. we truly enjoyed it, and I have asked for Mastering the Art of French Cooking for my birthday. (We also came out of the movie with a hankering for French cuisine!)

I just love your book, can't wait to see the movie, although, it probably will not be the same.

You so inspired me that I went out and purchased some Julia Child cook books! I am attempting her Informal Dinner Menu for next weekend with a few of my trusted Guinea Pigs...they always love to attend.

Good luck with your new book...can't wait until they hit the bookstores!

Will you ever attempt writing your own cook book? Now that would be something!!

Cheers!

Julie: You are an inspiration to me. It isn't about your book being made into a movie (though that is a very interesting chapter to add to your life); what inspires me is your creativity, enthusiasm and tenacity for which it took for you to begin and complete your “life with Julia” year. I wish you nothing but a joy-filled life and many wonderful memories.

Saw the movie yesterday with some friends and LOVED it! Yes, I'm sure reality is much grittier than the movie but there was a sweetness and a freshness that I haven't seen in years! I appreciated the warmth that poured forth and the depiction of good married love. What a joy! Maybe you've heard this before but I was inspired and I'm looking forward to reading through your blog a bit. Thanks for being willing to go out on a limb and be transparent for the world. I pray that you are blessed!

Loved the film. I'm a Queens girl, I grew up in Woodside and rode the 7 train to High School. I read your interview in the CT Post, how about adding "Big Night" to your favorite food films, and you're right "Mostly Martha" was far superior to "No Reservations". I'm 49 and I don't know any woman my age or younger who can cook. I do my best, I learned alot from my Mom, who watched Julia Child on PBS. Julie you are an insperation. Thank you for the wonderful story and film. The audience last night applauded at the end. I don't remember the last time that happened and we go to the movies quite often. Congratulations!

Hi, Julie.

My husband and I saw J&J last night. We loved it. Well, I loved it. My husband went to the "bathroom" and spent half an hour in Transformers. If there's no killing and explosions, he's not a huge fan. :-) Don't take it personally.

What an amazing story you have, cooking so many complicated recipes in one year. It really inspired me to start cooking again. I laid in bed last night until 2 a.m. just thinking of all of the recipes I could tackle and counting down the hours until the library opened.

I do have a question, though. Perhaps you already addressed this in an earlier blog posting. Is there any way to clarify what Julia thought of your blog? It didn't seem like something she would have hated. Did you ever find out what she meant?

Thanks for inspiring so many people and reinventing Julia for a younger generation.

I too am curious about the part where Julia says she 'hates' you... did that happen for real?
And I was also wondering, do you still have your original blog, from the project? I'd love to read it!
Anyways the movie was great,I'm an aspiring writer myself. Never tried to get anything published though... someday!:)

Dear Julie Powell,

I was so moved by you'r book that I started a blog of my own. My blog is regarding a nurological illness and AA. I just hope to find people who can relate. Most of all there's a special feeling to writing. I belong to a writer's group so it's something I like to do anyways. The blog gives me a sense of purpose.

In the movie Julie blogs that Julia kept her from drowning in her life. I drove home thinking of that. Knowing exactly what she meant by drowning in her own life.

Thanks for the inspiration. And the movie was delightful! People were applauding.

Bonjour,
I just saw your movie last night. I was excited to go because I enjoy cooking and I remembered my Grandmother loved Julia Child. I wanted to see what the big deal was. I enjoyed the movie very much and it was refreshing change from everything else in the theaters these days. I can't say that I had heard about your blog before last night but I am thankful for your willingness to be so adventurous in the kitchen.
Even though I like cooking, I have picky tastebuds! I could not be so brave!
Best wishes.

I saw the movie last night and absolutely loved it. It was delightful, engaging, and touched on the things near to my heart...cooking, writing, and my handsome husband. Your story is quite inspiring, Julie. I left the theater with a new passion to be creative in the kitchen, write more often, and treasure my man. Congratulations on your accomplishments!

What a fun, wonderful movie!
When I was a kid, and stayed home sick from school, I watched Julia on TV, in re-runs, she always fascinated me.
I came to cooking late in life, about 3 years ago I took a job as a manager of a soup kitchen. Trial by fire : ) You learn to cook very creativly, because you use what you've got.
Our mouths have been watering since the sceen w/the bruschetta. So, I'm trying to make some tonight for dinner. We'll see how it goes.
Anyways, thanks for your hard work, and for following thru on your dream.

Loved the movie; loved what you did. Thank you! It has occurred to me (of social security and medicare age) that Julia lived on butter, cream, beef and alcohol and survived to age 90. Adele what's her name of the same generation lived on sprouts and vitamins and died young of cancer--at about the time Jim Fixx, the guy who got us all running, keeled over of a heart attack on one of his jogs. Julia's choices are certainly more fun, with better results.

Arriving home, I flipped open my first edition "Mastering the Art of French Cooking", and the page that appeared featured the recipe for the piece de resistance presented in the final scene. It read just like the movie. That book has been on my kitchen counter for 43 years, but I'm not sure I have ever actually made anything in it; if so it was decades ago. The recipes seem quite simple (some of them are a lot of work, but not difficult) compared to what the foodies of today concoct, but it made me really appreciate what Julia accomplished by dumbing down complicated and culturally arcane French techniques so we could all do it. It provides a view into how unsophisticated we were then; today she could ratchet it up a notch. We have improved--and probably thanks to her. After seeing the movie about it's construction, I could feel her presence in my book. (Now, on to Alice Waters.)

A few of the best chefs here in the valley are featuring Julia dinners now. Beef bourguignon is calling me. Julia made it in an orange pot, then Julie made it in her orange pot, and I have that same orange pot, so here goes....

Yesterday, I was so fortunate to see J&J! Initially, my interest in the movie was due to my love of Julia Child. She has always intrigued me with her personality and her cooking techniques. I remember watching her show when I was younger. She definately is an icon. In my opinion, I feel only a small hand of chefs/cooks come close to the amazingness that was Julia. (I love Giada de Laurentiis and Ina Garten)
Your story was intriguing. What an inspiration for those aspiring to follow their heart and deadlines. I feel like I should tell you I'm proud of you. KUDOS! I'm a vegetarian so I have to admit the lobster scene and duck boning were hard to watch.=) But I'm okay. Have you overcome your "lobster killer" status? =) I really can handle it though because I cook for my kids and hubby all the time. And they are meat eaters and tell me they will always be. The movie's end brought me to tears. I can't wait until it comes out on DVD. Best of luck with your career, marriage, dreams and cooking.

Hi Julie,
Last night my wife dragged me moaning and groaning to a "chick flick" titled Julie & Julia. Guess what, I truly enjoyed it. Very funny, clever weaving of stories & eras, and great acting. So here I am, a regular guy writing on your blog. Did you ever meet Julia Child? Congratulations. I'm a new fan.
